Fingering Weight
I've created a separate category for fingering-weight yarns that are bit too softly spun for making socks. One example is the Peruvian two-ply wool that I sometimes offer; it is soft and lovely, and takes dye well, but doesn't have the durability to be worn as socks. I also find occasional batches of fingering weight yarn in limited amounts, so check back often. If you are looking for yarn to match a pattern with a 7-st-per-inch gauge, you might want to check out the Sock Yarns category; many of those yarns are suitable for projects like baby jackets, gloves, and scarves, as well as socks.
